Total Eclipse DFW: TrizCom PR's Guide to Totality

Total Eclipse DFW

Total Eclipse DFW is an all-encompassing regional initiative designed to be the central hub for everything related to the upcoming Total Solar Eclipse on April 8, 2024. Launched by Dallas-based TrizCom PR Founder and CEO Jo Trizila, the platform aims to offer vital information on Eclipse-related events, safety protocols and viewing glasses. The website is continuously updated and serves as the one-stop shop for residents and visitors who wish to experience this rare celestial event in the Dallas-Fort Worth region.

Importance Of The 2024 Total Solar Eclipse In Dallas-Fort Worth

The April 8, 2024, Total Solar Eclipse is not just a celestial phenomenon; it's a once-in-a-lifetime event that holds particular importance for the Dallas-Fort Worth area. This region falls under the Path of Totality, making it an ideal location to experience the full grandeur of the Eclipse. Local cities, businesses and organizations are joining to make the Metroplex a premier destination for Eclipse enthusiasts. The event also offers an unprecedented opportunity for local businesses to capitalize on the influx of visitors, thus boosting the regional economy. Total Eclipse DFW is committed to ensuring everyone can safely enjoy this extraordinary event by providing access to ISO-certified Solar Eclipse viewing glasses.

What Is A Total Solar Eclipse And How Is It Different Than Other Solar Eclipses?

A Total Solar Eclipse is an event where the Moon aligns perfectly between the Earth and the Sun, completely covering the Sun's disk and casting a shadow on Earth. While committed Eclipse enthusiasts may witness this phenomenon more frequently, it's uncommon for the average person to experience a Total Solar Eclipse. This is because you not only need the Total Solar Eclipse to happen during the day but you also need to be within the narrow strip known as the Path of Totality. This Path, formed by the moon's dark, umbral shadow, stretches around 10,000 miles in length but is merely about 100 miles wide. While in the Path of Totality (which DFW will be this April 8, 2024), the sky darkens significantly, and temperatures can drop. The Path of Totality only lasts a few minutes. It is only safe to remove your Solar Eclipse glasses during Totality.

This is in contrast to other types of Solar Eclipses, like Partial and Annular Eclipses. In a Partial Eclipse, the Moon covers only a portion of the Sun, creating a crescent shape. The degree of coverage varies depending on the observer's location relative to the path of Totality. Although it's not as dramatic as in the path of Totality, there is a noticeable reduction in daylight during a Partial Eclipse. For the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse, only a small percentage of Americans will be in the Path of Totality. However, every American city will experience a Partial Solar Eclipse.

In an Annular Eclipse, the Moon is too far from Earth to cover the Sun entirely, leaving a bright ring visible (also known as The Ring of Fire).

What sets a Total Solar Eclipse apart from Partial and Annular Eclipses is the experience it offers. Observers located within the narrow path of the Moon's full shadow, or "umbra," can witness "Totality," which lasts just a few minutes but offers a breathtaking view of the Sun's corona and sometimes even solar flares and prominences. In contrast, a Partial or Annular Eclipse doesn't offer this dramatic spectacle and requires protective eyewear throughout the event to safely observe the Sun.

Total Solar Eclipses are rare occurrences, happening roughly every 18 months somewhere on Earth, but often not repeating in the same location for many years or even centuries.

According to The Farmers Almanac, “Only eight Total Solar Eclipses have hit American soil since the signing of the Declaration of Independence!”

·         June 24, 1778

·         October 27, 1780

·         July 18, 1860

·         July 29, 1878

·         March 7, 1970

·         February 26, 1979

·         August 21, 2017

Following the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse, the next time Americans will be able to witness one will be August 12, 2045- some 22 years later.

To put it into perspective, Let’s look at Trizila’s daughter's ages in relation to the next Total Solar Eclipses in the United States.

·         August 21, 2017 – Kate was 7 years old

·         April 8, 2024 – Kate will be 14 years old

·         August 12, 2045 – Kate will be 36 years old

·         November 15, 2077 – Kate will be 67 years old

·         May 11, 2078 – Kate will be 68 years old

·         May 1, 2079 – Kate will be 69 years old

·         September 14, 2099 – Kate will be 89 years old

The 2024 Total Solar Eclipse is particularly noteworthy for Dallas-Fort Worth, as the region last witnessed such an event on July 29, 1878—146 years ago. Remarkably, the next Total Solar Eclipse in DFW won't occur for almost another 300 years.

Jo Trizila's Personal Experience In 2017

In 2017, Trizila found herself amid a disappointing moment that would later fuel the creation of this campaign. Her daughter, Kate, was in grade school then, and the entire school had been eagerly learning about an upcoming Solar Eclipse dubbed "The Great American Eclipse." The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) of Kate's elementary school had even bought viewing glasses for the event for every student.

Remarkably, the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse marked the first time since the founding of the United States in 1776 that a Total Solar Eclipse traversed a path exclusively within the country – coast to coast. Furthermore, the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse held the distinction of being the first Total Solar Eclipse visible from the contiguous United States since the year 1979. It was practically impossible to turn on the news and not hear something about this Eclipse. The anticipation was palpable.

While DFW was not in the Path of Totality for the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse, the region enjoyed a Partial Eclipse.

The Incident With Non-ISO-Certified Glasses

The 2017 Total Solar Eclipse was a highly anticipated event that created a surge in demand for special Solar Eclipse glasses. Unfortunately, this also opened the door for scams and counterfeit products. Many companies claimed to sell ISO-certified Solar Eclipse glasses but were actually selling fake or non-compliant products, posing significant risks to consumers' eyes. Scammers used the high demand to flood the market with these non-certified glasses. These fake products could literally burn out your eyes if you looked at the sun too long through them.

Unfortunately, like so many people, on the day of the Partial Eclipse (Aug. 21, 2017), it was discovered that unbeknownst to them, the glasses purchased by the PTA were not ISO-certified. As a result, the children could not safely view this celestial event outside. The experience disappointed students and highlighted the need for reliable and certified Solar Eclipse viewing glasses. (Thankfully Jo bought glasses for her TrizCom PR team, had an extra pair and ran up to school so Kate could still experience the Eclipse.)

The Impact On Her Daughter And School

The incident was a formative experience for Trizila's daughter and her classmates, as most students missed out on an educational opportunity they had been looking forward to for weeks. It also posed a broader question about the level of preparedness and accurate information available to the public concerning Solar Eclipses and what type of glasses you need.

Motivated by this unfortunate event, Trizila decided to ensure that no one would miss out on such a once-in-a-lifetime experience again, especially not in their backyards. Hence, Total Eclipse DFW was born to provide accurate and comprehensive information related to the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse in Dallas-Fort Worth and, equally important, to become a trusted resource for people wanting to purchase safe, certified Eclipse glasses.

A Note About ISO Certification

Total Eclipse DFW - ISO Certification

For a safe experience observing the Total Solar Eclipse and Partial Solar Eclipses, it's crucial to prioritize eye protection. The global benchmark for this purpose is ISO 12312-2:2015, titled "Eye and face protection — Sunglasses and related eyewear — Part 2: Filters for direct observation of the Sun."

Although ISO standards don't hold the force of law, they often inform government regulations. Therefore, while it's not strictly illegal to sell or use products that don't comply with ISO standards, it's generally unwise. Such products are likely unfit for their intended purpose, posing potential safety risks. Specifically, ISO 12312-2 outlines the requisite features a solar viewer must possess to ensure eye safety. The American Astrological Society (AAS) Solar Eclipse Task Force (SETF) strongly advises against using any solar viewing equipment that doesn't adhere to ISO 12312-2. The AAS has compiled a list of approved manufacturers and resellers. It is highly suggested that Eclipse glasses only be purchased from these companies. (And yes, Total Eclipse DFW is an AAS-approved reseller.)

Interestingly, you will see resellers on Amazon, eBay and other sites who claim NASA has approved or endorsed their solar viewers. However, it's important to note that NASA does not give such approvals or endorsements.
